Henderson is a fairly old town, coming into existence in the 1940’s. During World War II, the town developed around the emergence of the Basic Magnesium Plant. During the war years, Henderson was the main provider of this miracle metal to the allied troops. Unfortunately, after the war, there was not such a need for all of this magnesium and a number of workers were laid off. This lead to the majority of Henderson’s early population moving out of the area.
While the city was eventually saved, it has faced a number of difficulties during its developmental years. In fact, during the late 80’s a factory that produced rocket fuel caught fire and eventually lead to several small explosions in the city. This fire would lead to the start of several earthquakes and the destruction of small buildings as far away as Las Vegas. However, the city would bounce back from this setback and today there is no evidence that the explosion ever occurred. In fact, at the site of the old fuel factory know stands several prominent office buildings.
The area is surrounded by a gorgeous mountain range that has been covered by volcanic ash. Some of the peaks of these mountains reach as high as 3,800 ft into the air. The surrounding area consists of typical Nevada desert. While there is very little in terms of attractions and natural sightseeing, the area is the perfect distance from the bright lights of Las Vegas.
